Did you know
Benjamin Franklin carried out oil-on-water experiments on the common in the 1770s. Its Grade II listed bandstand, the largest in London, dates from 1890, not the 1861 once believed.
Local tip
Open all year and free to enter. Clapham Common and Clapham South stations on the Northern line both serve the common, so the bandstand is an easy walk from either.
