The park hosted the first exhibition football game played under the rules of the newly formed Football Association on 9 January 1864.
Local tip
The Peace Pagoda, erected in 1985 and moved in 1994 to the woodland walk near the Old English Garden, is a quiet spot close to the river. Please do not climb it.
