Did you know
The garden's sheltered microclimate, created by the surrounding walls and the Thames nearby, lets it grow plants that shouldn't survive in London, including a rock garden built partly from Icelandic lava brought back by explorer Joseph Banks in 1772.
Local tip
Unlike most London parks, admission is charged and it's closed on Saturdays, so check opening days before visiting; the on-site cafe in the walled garden is a quieter spot to sit than most central London options.
