The building was previously the Northumberland Arms/Hotel, referenced by name in Arthur Conan Doyle's 1892 story 'The Adventure of the Noble Bachelor'; it was refitted in 1957 using a Holmes memorabilia exhibition originally built for the 1951 Festival of Britain.
