Did you know
The square's Fourth Plinth, originally intended for an equestrian statue that was never funded, has since 1999 hosted a rotating series of contemporary art commissions rather than a permanent monument.
Local tip
Visit at dusk when the fountains are lit and Nelson's Column is floodlit, and check what's currently on the Fourth Plinth, since the artwork changes every year or two and is often worth seeking out.
