The Grade II* building was completed in 1933 and began life as the Masonic Peace Memorial Building.
Local tip
Free entry, open Tuesday to Saturday 10am-5pm, but the library and South Gallery close 1-2pm daily and all day Saturday, so a weekday morning shows the most.
