In 1824 Soane paid £2,000 for the sarcophagus of Pharaoh Seti I, the most expensive object he ever bought, after the British Museum declined the price.
Local tip
Arrive right at 10am opening on a weekday to beat the queue. Weekend afternoons can mean a 30-minute wait. Or come on the first Tuesday evening of the month for the candlelit opening, but queue by 5pm since only the first 200 people get in.
