Beneath the grounds lie the remains of Elsyng Palace, a scheduled ancient monument where Henry VIII's children Edward, Mary and Elizabeth spent part of their childhoods.

Local tip

The house is free and open Thursday to Sunday, 11am to 5pm, from April to October, with shorter winter hours (January to March it opens weekends and bank holidays only). The gardens are open daily and the Cedar Tree cafe is closed on Mondays.
