A Victorian cemetery split into East and West sections on a wooded Highgate hillside, the burial place of Karl Marx and numerous other notable Victorians, known for its overgrown monuments and catacombs.

Did you know
Since 2020 the atmospheric West Cemetery, with its Egyptian Avenue and Circle of Lebanon vaults, can be explored independently rather than only on a guided tour as had been required for years before, though its steep, uneven paths still make it less accessible than the flatter East side.
Local tip
Buy tickets online in advance since only card payment is accepted at the gate, and if you only have time for one side, the East Cemetery holds Marx's grave and is easier walking than the hillier West side.
