Did you know
This is the sixth actual theatre building on the same site since 1683. Earlier incarnations staged everything from sea battles in an on-stage water tank to Samuel Phelps's celebrated Shakespeare seasons in the 1840s–60s, before falling derelict and being revived by Lilian Baylis in the 1930s specifically so north Londoners had the same access to theatre as those south of the Thames.
Local tip
It's a dance-and-ballet specialist today, not a general theatre, so check what's actually on before booking if you're expecting drama. It hosts some of the world's leading contemporary dance and ballet companies.
