Did you know
The entire collection was bequeathed to the nation in 1897 on condition that nothing ever leaves the building, and no piece is ever loaned out, which is why every Wallace Collection painting, including Fragonard's The Swing, can only ever be seen at Hertford House.
Local tip
The armoury on the ground floor is often skipped by visitors heading straight for the paintings upstairs, but it holds one of the finest collections of European and Asian arms and armour outside a dedicated military museum.
