William Booth preached his first open-air sermon outside the pub in 1865, which led to the East London Christian Mission, later the Salvation Army.

Local tip

Tables can be reserved through the pub's contact page, and the heated pergola garden makes it usable in winter. It opens at 3pm Monday to Thursday, at midday on Friday and Sunday, and at 11am on Saturday.
