General William Roy used the tower for the Anglo-French Survey of 1784-90, which led to the founding of the Ordnance Survey.
Local tip
The viewing platform is open on Sundays 10am-3pm (last entry 2.45pm), £5 for adults and £3.50 for children, up a spiral staircase of 86 steps, and it may close in bad weather. The tea room is open Thursday to Sunday.
