Did you know
Its compact Palladian design became so influential that it furnished a standard template not just for later Georgian English villas but for plantation houses in the American colonies. In 1903 it became the first 18th-century house in England preserved by a public body.
Local tip
Henrietta Howard built this specifically as an escape from royal court life, so visit with that in mind. It's a genuinely personal retreat rather than a grand state house, on a human scale compared to somewhere like Ham House nearby.
