Did you know
The Arab Hall, added between 1877 and 1881, cost more to build than the rest of the house combined and was designed by architect George Aitchison around a wall of antique tiles Leighton collected in Damascus, Turkey and Iran, topped with a golden dome.
Local tip
Look up in the Arab Hall rather than only at the tiled walls, the gilded dome and the small fountain at the room's centre are easy to miss if you focus on eye-level detail.
