Norman Balon was landlord for more than 60 years until 2006, and the pub's interior was recreated on stage for the 1989 play Jeffrey Bernard Is Unwell.
Local tip
Go in the afternoon for a quiet pint, as it is surprisingly calm by day and heaving in the evenings. There is no hot food, just crisps and snacks.
