Did you know
Its first president, from opening in 1891, was the sitting Prime Minister William Gladstone, an unusually high-profile figurehead for what was then a small local gallery aimed at the working communities of Camberwell and Peckham.
Local tip
Don't skip the Art Block and artist-designed garden behind the main building. The 2018 expansion into the old Peckham Road fire station added a whole second exhibition space that's easy to miss if you only visit the original gallery.
