Did you know
The Painted Hall inside took the artist James Thornhill nineteen years to complete, from 1707 to 1726, and its ceiling and walls cover more than 3,700 square metres, making it one of the largest painted interiors in Europe.
Local tip
The grounds and riverside colonnades are free to wander at any time, so save the paid Painted Hall ticket for when you have time to look up properly, since the ceiling detail takes a while to take in.
