Did you know
133 different Bishops of London lived here across 1,300 years of continuous use. The site witnessed events from the Anarchy of the 12th century (when a bishop was held captive) to bomb damage in the Second World War, right up until the last bishop moved out in 1973.
Local tip
The walled botanic gardens are free to enter even when the house museum isn't, so it's a genuine option even for a quick stop rather than a full visit. Look out for the surviving Tudor courtyard among the later rebuilding.
