William III and Mary II bought the house, then called Nottingham House, in 1689 for £20,000 and had Christopher Wren expand it.
Local tip
It is open Wednesday to Sunday, 10am to 6pm (last admission 5pm), and closed on Monday and Tuesday. The Queen's State Apartments are closed until spring 2027 for re-presentation, but the rest of the palace stays open on the standard ticket.
