The ground was in use from at least 1598 until 1853 and an estimated 15,000 people are buried there.
Local tip
Open Wednesday to Friday and the first Saturday of each month, 12-2pm, but volunteer wardens run the gate so times can vary. A vigil is held at the ribbon gates at 7pm on the 23rd of every month.
