Did you know

The tunnels are entirely man-made, dug over centuries as chalk and flint mines. In the Blitz they sheltered up to about 15,000 people, and Jimi Hendrix played there twice, in December 1966 and January 1967.

Local tip

Entry is by guided tour only, leaving hourly from 10am (last tour 4pm), Wednesday to Sunday, on bank holidays and daily in local school holidays. Wear boots or trainers, as the floor is uneven and the caves stay cool.
