The shaft is a brick tower 50 feet across that was built above ground and then sunk under its own weight to a depth of 40 feet.
Local tip
Open Friday to Monday, 10:30am to 3:30pm (last entry 3pm), with tickets at £10 and under-16s free. A 45-minute guided tour runs at 12:30pm on Saturdays and Sundays and is included, so pre-book that slot.
