Did you know
Picasso's Guernica was shown here in 1939 in its only visit to Britain, and the gallery also gave Mark Rothko and Frida Kahlo their first-ever UK solo exhibitions, in 1961 and 1982.
Local tip
The gallery expanded into the former Whitechapel Public Library next door in 2009, effectively doubling in size, so it's worth allowing time to see both halves of the building, not just the original entrance.
