Architect John Francis Bentley built it between 1895 and 1903 almost entirely of brick and concrete, without steel reinforcement, following Byzantine tradition.
Local tip
The cathedral is free to enter and open daily 7:30am to 7pm. The tower lift to the viewing gallery, about 210 feet up, runs Wednesday to Sunday 10:30am to 4:30pm, with tickets from the Cathedral Shop.
