Did you know
The gallery opened in 1897 on the site of the former Millbank Prison, funded by sugar magnate Henry Tate, and the Clore Gallery wing built in 1987 was added specifically to house the Turner Bequest of over 300 oil paintings and 30,000 works on paper.
Local tip
Arrive on a weekday morning for a quiet walk through the Turner rooms, and take the Tate Boat river service from Tate Modern if you're visiting both galleries in one day.
