Did you know
London's Roman amphitheatre, first built around AD 70, was only found in 1988, when archaeologists dug ahead of a new Guildhall Art Gallery. It was rebuilt with stone walls around AD 100.
Local tip
The amphitheatre remains is reached free through the Guildhall Art Gallery on the yard's east side. Look down at the yard's paving first, where a curved line of dark stone traces the buried arena's edge.
